Litchi, also known as Litchi chinensis in scientific terms is a reddish pink fleshy and sweet fruit grown especially in the summer season. In India, Bihar is the leading state in litchi production followed by West Bengal and Assam. This fruit is eaten fresh but can also be canned or dried. The flavour of fresh pulp is aromatic and musky and dried pulp is acidic and sweet. Tezpur, Assam Litchi received the GI tag in 2015 because of its uniqueness and delicious flavour. Litchi cultivation can bring a huge profit to the farmers of northeastern region. Some amount of Litchi production is also taken place in Tripura. There is a high scope for growing this crop in larger amount in future.
