The  golden yellow colour silk is the pride of Assam. It is obtained from semi domesticated and multi voltine silkworm. These silkworms feed on the aromatic leaves of Som and Soalu plants and are reared on trees similiar to that of Tasar. The Muga silkworm is a single species with little genetic variation among populations, survives harsh climatic conditions and is subject to various diseases, pests and predators. A greater details on Muga silk grainage is provided in this segment.
